Outline Project Description: Building on work already undertaken by the proposers in the University of Edinburgh, this project will deliver a review of consent issues and processes and other procedures relating to the secure deposit, sharing and reuse of clinical materials in teaching, research and other educational activities. Drawing on exemplar policies and procedures and informed by further consultation the project will deliver best practice recommendations, workflows, and information and technical procedures for managing these processes in a scalable fashion.

This project will require consultation with representatives from a wide variety of stakeholders concerned with human and veterinary healthcare delivery, education and research in HE and FE institutions, the NHS, professional and statutory bodies and current repositories for clinical recordings. We have begun to develop the necessary links through collaboration on our current study with colleagues in Lothian Universities Hospital Division and have discussed in brief this project proposal with the General Medical Council who are supportive in principle. The proposers will also build on their existing substantial collaboration with NHS Education Scotland to ensure that new processes and policies speak also to those concerned with postgraduate education and training, and we will build on our close working relationship with colleagues in the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in the University of Edinburgh to address issues relevant to veterinary medicine and will involve experts in information science and learning technology disciplines at every stage to ensure a comprehensive and well-integrated solution for JISC and its Information Environment partners.
